Difference between Science & Religion

Recently, I asked "What is the difference between Science & Religion?" in Richard Dawkins' forum. After a while the discussion topic changed among the members, here's a list of differences that some of the member's shared with me. Below is the link to the forum question I asked.

Science

Religion

1. Science is verifiable

2. Science is to find the truth by evidence

3. A realistic, pragmatic, rigorous, down to earth, much more difficult approach. It ascertains that no amount of tradition, no amount of fantasies, can ever have any solid claim as to this elusive "truth". Its main postulate is that if one wants to uncover the truth about the physical world, one must look into the physical world itself to find the answer; outside, other worldly approaches are irrelevant

4. Science is concerned with objective things

1. Religion relies on ancient guesswork

2. Religion is to find the truth by a very complicated philosophy & hoping that you are correct without evidence

3. A lazy approach; grafting an ultimate solution to any possible question about the nature of the physical world, and the assumed "other" world, which might arise. It claims absolute, definitive, obstinate truth

4. Religion is concerned with subjective things

The difference between Religion & Science

99.5 percent

Well this is a follow up of my previous post on Neanderthal. This is very exciting & I think the following two articles did a great job of summing it up:

So we're 99.5 percent like a Neanderthal

Neanderthal DNA reveals human divergence

Enjoy!

Neanderthals' DNA code unveiled

It's been 50,000 years since we have been around. At the beginning, Neanderthal's lived along side us. But then something happened. About 30,000 years ago, the Neanderathal's went extinct. Althought, scientist are not sure what caused the extinction but they have discovered something beautiful.

DNA from a 38,000 years old Neanderthal's found in Crotia have been unveiled. This is really remarkable. The Chicago Tribune wrote a great article on this & here's a link to that"

To give everyone an idea of the human evolution tree, here's a picture of our ancestors tree. Thanks to Rediscovering Biology.

Richard Dawkins in University of Kansas

I had the opportunity to go & listen to Richard Dawkins at KU. It was amazing. His lectures & his writing makes one think, ask questions , seek proof.

After the speech, I had the chance to speak with Victor Bailey, Director of Hall Center for the Humanities. I asked him about my thought, my theory. I came from a very conservative religious background. I recon at one point in life I, myself was also very religious, God fearing & conservative. So, for me to say/accept/think there's no God is still difficult. My analogy is, What if God just like a programmer created us. Evolution is part of the process (note here, I believe in evolution, I think it's an on-going process) & now he's just watching everything without intervening at all. We are the elements of the program. He (God, the programmer) knows what the outcome will be. By that I mean, whether if we chose right or wrong, it doesn't matter. We don't know what the result will be, but God already knows how his created program suppose to end. And that is why he doesn't need to intervene. Dr. Bailey's response to that was, essentially you are still believing in God without a proof. We are assuming that there is a programmer, a God who created everything. And then he recommended Richard Dawkin's "The Blind Watchmaker" on this matter.

During the QA session, someone had asked Dawkins about the fact/belief that being religious makes one ethical as well, isn't that a good thing?! His answer to that was religion does not teach people ethics. It is the society that teaches ethics, it is the society that outlines what is & isn't ethical. Richard made reference to the first & second testament. According to Steven Pinker, it's the society & gene that teaches ethics. I asked Dr. Bailey about that as well & he agreed that yes it is both gene & society that teaches someone to ethical, not the society alone. Afterwards, I had the opportunity to meet, greet & talk with Richard Dawkins myself. I must say he is a very intelligent person. I am glad I went to listen to him even though I was tired & had just gotten off from work that evening.

Here's a BBC interview of RD on his new book "The God Delusion" that he was promoting at KU:

Google Video Trick & Mercedes-Benz S600

I like watching videos in Divx. I think the video quality and sound is much better in Divx compared to WMP or Google Player. Here's a old trick on downloading Google Video as .avi file so you can watch them in Divx.

Just right click on this link and save it as a bookmark Google Videos As AVI. So, in Firefox it is "Bookmark This Link" and for those who use Internet Explorer (IE) it is "Add to Favorites..."

Also for Firefox users you can just drag the link Google Videos As AVI over to "Bookmarks Toolbar." To enable your bookmarks toolbar, click on View then Toolbars and make sure Bookmarks Toolbar is checked.

Well, here's a great video on Mercedes-Benz S600. I love this video so much I have got it both in my laptop & my dektop at home. I have watched it at least 8 times so far.

Any Questions?! Shoot me an email.
